Music is a language in and of itself. Music has the power to express many different emotions and thoughts which even words may not describe. In fact, music may be the most intense way to express ourselves and communicate with others. My goal as a music teacher is to encourage and develop the student’s potential to read, understand, create, and express themselves through music.
Pedagogy:
I want to give students the most useful information each week so that they can progress steadily in their individual practice. An important thing to note is that individual practice is essential to success at a musical instrument. That being said, I will work to inspire students to do their best and enjoy the music that they are playing. I teach and play many styles and levels of music from advanced Classical and Jazz music to simple songs and hymns.
No matter the age, when we have a lesson the student should be learning new ideas and skills as well as reinforcing things previously learned. Students are encouraged to bring in pieces that they like (CD, IPod, sheet music) and learn about different styles, theory, and music history. This shows initiative and excitement about music. We must also remember that every individual is gifted is certain ways. Do not become discouraged by comparing yourself to other musicians. Be proud of your own talents and abilities and be thankful for what God has given to you!
For most students I teach individual lessons that are once a week for thirty minutes. Group lessons are great when you have the right people, and I do arrange for these as well. I am currently teaching lessons at several locations, so contact me if you want to set up an interview (free of charge). People often ask “what age should we begin piano lessons?” Well everyone is different but the youngest students are usually age 5 – 7. I would suggest beginning instruction in the 2nd – 4th grade range. Adults can begin at any age, but must expect that it will take several years to sound proficient on the
piano. Read more about the benefits of musical study…
